Description
SLSA (Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate)
What is SLSA?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) is a mild, anionic surfactant derived from coconut and palm oils. Despite its similar name to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), SLSA is much gentler and less irritating to the skin and eyes. It’s a naturally derived, biodegradable ingredient widely used in personal care products.
SLSA typically comes in a fine white powder or flakes, often referred to as a "foam booster" or gentle cleansing agent.
Key Benefits:
-
Very Mild and Gentle: Suitable for sensitive skin, babies, and delicate areas.
-
Excellent Foam & Lather: Creates rich, dense, and luxurious foam in both liquid and solid cleansing products.
-
Biodegradable & Eco-Friendly: Derived from renewable sources and breaks down quickly in the environment.
-
Non-irritating: Does not strip natural oils harshly, making it ideal for gentle cleansers.
-
Versatile: Can be used in powders, bars, liquid cleansers, and bath products.
Common Uses:
-
Facial cleansers and powders
-
Shampoo bars and solid shampoo formulations
-
Bubble bars and bath fizzies
-
Body washes and shower gels
-
Cleansing powders and exfoliants
-
Bath bombs (for foam generation)
Usage Rates:
-
Typically used at 5% to 30% depending on the product type:
-
In cleansing powders, usage can be 15% – 30%.
-
In liquid products, often 5% – 10%, blended with other surfactants.
-
In bath bombs or bubble bars, 10% – 20% to create foam and bubbles.
-
Formulation Tips:
-
SLSA is not very water-soluble and requires thorough mixing or blending with other surfactants or co-surfactants.
-
It can be combined with mild surfactants like Cocamidopropyl Betaine to enhance foam and reduce dryness.
-
Avoid overheating SLSA as it can clump or degrade at high temperatures.
-
Because it’s a powder, take care when handling to avoid dust inhalation—use masks and gloves.
Storage:
-
Keep in a cool, dry place in a sealed container to prevent moisture absorption.
-
Moisture can cause clumping and reduce performance.
