Description
Rose Water / Rose Hydrosol
Rose water, also called rose hydrosol, is a gentle, fragrant liquid obtained from the steam distillation of rose petals. It is prized in handmade skincare for its hydrating, soothing, and toning properties, making it ideal for facial mists, toners, serums, soaps, and lotions. Its natural aroma provides a calming sensory experience, while its mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects help refresh, balance, and protect the skin, suitable for all skin types including sensitive and irritated skin.
Typical usage rates in formulations: 5–20% in toners and mists, 1–5% in creams, lotions, and serums, and up to 10% in soaps.
- Usage Rate: Typically 5–10% of the total water content in cold or hot process soap.
- Purpose: Adds mild fragrance, skin-soothing properties, and extra hydration.
- How to Use: Replace part or all of the water in your soap recipe with rose water.
- Notes:
- Because it’s water-based, it should be added before lye solution mixing (not at trace) to avoid altering saponification.
- Heat and lye can reduce its fragrance, so pairing with a complementary essential oil is common.
- Avoid using it in very high percentages, as it can make soap batter too thin or slow trace.
