Description

Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC)

Thickening • Gelling • Stabilizing • Water Soluble

Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a versatile, non-ionic, water-soluble polymer widely used in cosmetic and personal-care formulations as a thickener, gelling agent, and viscosity modifier. It is particularly useful for improving the texture, consistency, and stability of water-based formulations while creating smooth and pleasant product textures.

Hydroxyethylcellulose is supplied as an off-white granular powder that hydrates in water to form a smooth, viscous gel. It is an excellent choice for handmade formulations where controlled viscosity, stability, and a desirable sensory feel are needed.

Key Benefits

  • Thickening: Increases viscosity and gives formulations a richer texture.

  • Gelling: Forms a smooth gel when properly hydrated.

  • Water Soluble: Easily incorporated into water-based formulations.

  • Non-Ionic: Compatible with a broad range of cosmetic ingredients.

  • Stabilizing: Helps improve the consistency and physical stability of formulations.

  • Texture Enhancement: Creates smooth, spreadable, and pleasant-to-use products.

  • Clear Gel Formation: Can produce a clear gel when adequately hydrated.

Applications

Hydroxyethylcellulose is suitable for a variety of handmade personal-care products, including:

  • Facial gels

  • Body gels

  • Aloe vera gels

  • Hair gels

  • Shampoos

  • Body washes

  • Facial cleansers

  • Lotions and creams

  • Serums

  • Styling products

  • Liquid soaps

  • Other water-based formulations

Solubility

Water Soluble

Hydroxyethylcellulose is soluble in water and is primarily incorporated into the aqueous phase of formulations.

Suggested Usage

0.1–3%

The appropriate usage rate depends on the desired viscosity and texture of the finished product. Lower concentrations can provide light viscosity enhancement, while higher concentrations can produce thicker gels and more substantial textures.

How to Hydrate

Hydration time is the period between the initial wetting of the HEC particles and the start of dissolution and swelling. Hydration is affected by both water temperature and pH.

For best results, gradually add HEC to room-temperature water with a neutral pH while mixing to minimize lump formation. Once fully hydrated, the formulation can be heated and the pH adjusted as needed.

Slightly increasing the water temperature to approximately 28–30°C may help improve hydration time and clarity. Avoid excessively high temperatures or extreme pH during initial hydration, as these conditions may increase the risk of lumping.

Ideal for Handmade Formulators

Hydroxyethylcellulose is an excellent choice for handmade formulators looking to thicken, gel, stabilize, and improve the texture of water-based products. It can be used to create a wide range of formulations, from lightweight serums and cleansers to rich gels, shampoos, and haircare products.
