Description

Dried Arnica flowers are traditionally used as a botanical ingredient in external, topical preparations. They are generally infused into a carrier oil rather than applied directly to the skin.

Common Uses

  • Infused oils — macerated in olive, sunflower, jojoba, sweet almond, or another suitable carrier oil.

  • Salves & balms — the infused oil can be combined with beeswax, butters, and other oils.

  • Massage oils — incorporated into botanical oil blends intended for massage.

  • Body creams & lotions — used through an arnica-infused carrier oil.

  • Body butters — suitable for rich, anhydrous skin-conditioning formulations.

  • Soothing skin preparations — traditionally used in products formulated to soothe and condition the skin.

  • Soap — the infused oil can be incorporated into cold-process or melt-and-pour soap.

These are practical formulation starting points rather than established maximum safety limits. The concentration of arnica constituents extracted into the oil can vary depending on the flowers, carrier oil, extraction time, temperature, and method.

Example: 10% Arnica Oil Infusion

For a 100 g batch:

  • 10 g dried arnica flowers

  • 90 g carrier oil

Infuse the flowers into the carrier oil using an appropriate maceration method, then strain and filter thoroughly before using the finished infused oil.

Safety

Arnica should be treated with caution because it can cause skin irritation or allergic/contact reactions in some people.

  • External use only.

  • Do not apply directly to broken, damaged, or irritated skin.

  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.

  • Do not ingest.

  • Patch testing is recommended before use.

  • Use cautiously for individuals sensitive to plants in the daisy/Asteraceae family.

  • For commercial products, appropriate safety, stability, and regulatory assessments should be conducted.

Note: An arnica-infused oil made from dried flowers is not chemically equivalent to a concentrated commercial arnica extract or standardized arnica preparation, so their usage percentages should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.
